Conditions of participation for the 37th SPORT 2000 Traunsee Bergmarathon 2026
The mountain marathon is an extreme alpine event for technically skilled and endurance athletes. The goal is to climb all the peaks around Lake Traunsee. This involves covering a distance of approx. 63 km and 4,500 metres of elevation gain. Some of the different sections include alpine terrain, including category A and B via ferrata passages.
Two half marathon variants are also offered (Gmunden – Ebensee or Ebensee – Gmunden).
Away from the official route, there may be an increased risk of falling and rockfall, which is why shortcuts (including hairpin bends, curves, serpentines, etc.) or self-selected route variations are strictly prohibited and will result in the withdrawal of the start number. Marshals are positioned along the route for this purpose.
The organiser expressly points out that appropriate preparation for these circumstances is necessary and advisable. Furthermore, participants should only take part if they are in the best of health. Participating shortly after or during an illness (e.g. infection) can lead to serious health problems and even be life-threatening. The organiser therefore appeals to the common sense and personal responsibility of all participants. Participants are required to undergo a sports medical examination prior to the event, which may be checked if necessary.
The disclaimer includes, among other things:
Each participant runs at their own risk and peril. In the event that an incident actually occurs (e.g. injury, death, damage, etc.), the athlete expressly and irrevocably waives any claims for damages (on whatever legal grounds) against the organiser, the respective landowners, path owners and all persons involved in the implementation, initiation or otherwise connected with the event. The participant further declares that they will indemnify and hold harmless the organiser, the landowners or path owners and all persons involved in the implementation, initiation or in any other way connected with the event with regard to any claims by third parties (social security institutions, other participants, landowners, etc.).
By signing, the participant also confirms:
- that he has sufficient knowledge of the route and has also obtained sufficient information about the weather conditions immediately before the start.
- that they are physically capable of completing the chosen route. In addition, each participant confirms that their fitness for sport has been examined and confirmed by a sports doctor prior to the mountain marathon. Participation is at the participant's own risk and may be monitored by the organiser. In the event of non-compliance, the organiser expressly accepts no liability for any damage or injury.
- Alpine experience to protect yourself and other participants as best as possible (e.g. rockfall).
- Sure-footedness on alpine paths and trails, even in exposed terrain with a risk of falling or, for example, short sections secured with ropes. This sure-footedness must not be impaired by any fear of heights that may arise in exposed terrain or terrain with a risk of falling.
- Ability to navigate in alpine terrain even in poor weather and visibility conditions.
The points listed by the organiser are not exhaustive, but rather serve as guidelines.
The Traunsee Mountain Marathon offers three routes:
- Mountain marathon around Lake Traunsee: Gmunden – Gmunden
- Half distance – Mountain marathon: Gmunden – Ebensee
- Half distance – Mountain marathon: Ebensee – Gmunden
The following equipment must be carried throughout the entire mountain marathon:
mandatory equipment:
-
Sturdy, closed footwear
-
Mobile phone with stored mountain marathon emergency number (+43 677 64 60 20 42)
-
first aid kit (Minimum contents: 1x 5×5 cm compress, 1x elastic gauze bandage, 2x plasters, 1.6x2m emergency blanket)
-
rescue whistle
-
Headlamp (routes: Gmunden – Gmunden and Gmunden – Ebensee)
-
Drinking container including 1 litre of liquid
-
Rain jacket + headgear for sun/cold protection
(Outer trousers depending on the weather forecast – will be announced the day before the event or provided upon collection)
The compulsory equipment must be presented when collecting the race number, will be checked and marked.
The organiser may check that participants are carrying the required equipment at any time before the start of the event and at the checkpoints. Failure to carry the required equipment will result in the withdrawal of the race number.
Equipment may not be left at the refreshment stations, with the exception of headlamps at the Gedenkstein refreshment station and in the containers provided for this purpose at the start of the Naturfreundesteig trail.
Each participant will receive their personalised race number when they present their registration confirmation at the race number distribution point.
The race number must be worn on the chest or stomach and must be fully visible throughout the entire mountain marathon.
The start number is personal and therefore non-transferable.
For safety reasons, the mountain marathon emergency number is printed on the shirt. This number should be contacted immediately in the event of withdrawal from the race or in an emergency.
In Gmunden (Town Hall Square)
Friday from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Distribution of race numbers for all routes
After registering, each participant will receive a confirmation email and, shortly before the event, a start card. One of these must be printed out and brought along to the start number distribution point. The start documents can only be collected upon presentation of the printed order confirmation or start card from the registration and a personal official photo ID. When collecting the start number documents for another participant, you will need their order confirmation/start card as well as a photo ID of the person and their mandatory equipment for the equipment check.
The current route briefing for all starters by the person in charge (both in Gmunden for the entire Mountain Marathon and Mountain Marathon Gmunden-Ebensee and in Ebensee for the Mountain Marathon Ebensee-Gmunden) will begin approximately 20 minutes before the official start time.
The route will be marked with signs, barrier tape, etc. by an experienced team.
There is no entitlement to continuous markings that would make it unnecessary to find one's own way in alpine terrain.
The organiser accepts no liability for this.
In darkness or adverse weather conditions, markings may disappear, be obscured or not be visible in time, which is why every participant must be able to find their way around the terrain.
We would also like to point out that, unfortunately, it can sometimes happen that the markings are removed by third parties. The markings are removed section by section by the tail runners immediately AFTER the time limit has expired.
