The history of the Traunsee Bergmarathon
The start of the mountain marathon
The idea of climbing all the mountain peaks around Lake Traunsee in a 24-hour marathon came from the late J. Willi Buchinger, an endurance athlete and extreme mountaineer from Pinsdorf near Gmunden.

The chronological sequence
1989
In 1989, after much preparation, reconnaissance, timekeeping, etc., Willi Buchinger, with the support of his family and mountain friends, officially launched this mountain adventure with his first personal announcement. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate on the first date, so the first mountain marathon premiered a week later on the original alternate date, 10 June 1989. The ‘king's tour’ in this competition, the Traunstein ascent, led over the Hernlersteig. Some participants with good local knowledge and home advantage immediately chose the unmarked paths over the “Hochkamp” or the ‘Zierler’ to the dominant mountain on Lake Traunsee. Of the 42 walkers and runners who started, more than half threw in the towel. At that time, the route still went over the Großer Sonnstein; the ascent over the Feuerkogel did not take place until 1990. Wolfgang Kölblinger from Traunkirchen and Alois Leitner from Weyregg crossed the finish line in Gmunden-Weyer at the same time with an unexpected top time of 8.55 hours. It took almost two hours for the other participants to arrive. The organisers of this first marathon estimated at the time that the first athletes would not reach the town on Lake Traunsee until around 16 hours later (starting at 3 a.m.).
1990
In 1990, only 42 of the more than 150 registered participants took part due to bad weather. However, 16 runners completed the entire route and arrived in Gmunden between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m.
1991
In 1991, 73 die-hards, including 5 women, took part in the 3rd marathon in beautiful weather. Comment from a German mountain runner: ‘There is no comparable event in Austria or Germany.’
1992
Despite cancellation the day before due to heavy rain, 32 participants were determined to go ahead with the tour in these weather conditions.
1993
The fifth event on 19 June 1993 was a record year in terms of participants and performances, with 103 participants taking part, including two female starters.
1994
The ultra mountain marathon in 1994 presented the ‘mountain-going’ athletes (172 participants) with very special challenges.
1995
The first runners arrived at the checkpoint in Ebensee-Rindbach at 7:30 a.m. after completing the queen stage over the Grünberg, Traunstein (Naturfreundesteig) and Spitzelsteinalm (Daxnersteig). The unofficial best time was 9 hours and 55 minutes.
1996
On 6 June 1996, 132 participants from three countries completed this marathon, with more than half of them completing the entire tour over the Feuerkogel and the subsequent so-called ‘grass mountains’.
1997
Just three days after the successful 9th Mountain Marathon, Willi Buchinger from Pinsdorf, the ‘inventor’ and organiser of nine marathons, died on 15 July 1997 at the age of 52 after a long illness. In his honour, the mountain marathon ‘Around Lake Traunsee’ is now known as the ‘Willi Buchinger Memorial Run’.
1998
In 1998, the Traunstoana mountaineering group, part of the Nature Friends association, organised the 10th mountain marathon, with 114 endurance athletes taking part. Bernhard Weiss from Scharnstein set an unofficial course record of 8 hours and 6 minutes.
1999
Many participants still have fond memories of the 11th event on July 3, 1999. In high summer temperatures, 163 participants, including 23 women, completed the entire 70 km route with an elevation gain of 4500 m.
2000
In the millennium year 2000, despite less than ideal conditions – pouring rain in the early hours – 102 runners reached the finish line in Gmunden. Men and women from Ebensee-Rindbach also gave themselves the kick they needed to complete the half marathon. Rene Steinpatzer set the bar very high with his best time of 7 hours 35 minutes.
2002
On 2 July 2002, Reinhard Pototschnik, a marathon participant from Carinthia competing for the first time, caused a surprise by winning the royal route as the fastest runner. A total of 266 participants took part in the marked routes, 219 of whom reached the finish line.
2003
The 15th anniversary mountain marathon on 5 July 2003 showed the organisers the limits in terms of participant numbers. From Gmunden alone, 252 runners and walkers set off to tackle the original 70 km route. From Ebensee, 39 athletes also set off towards Feuerkogel to complete the half marathon. It was a ‘home game’ for Rene Steinpatzer, who achieved a best time of 8.02 hours.
2004
The runners set off for the first time on 3 July 2004 from the historic backdrop of Gmunden's town hall square. The new start/finish marathon centre right in the town centre by the lake was met with general approval. Willi Riederer from Ebensee set the unofficial best time of the day with 8:01 hours, while Karola Schustereder from Pinsdorf also remained the winner in the women's category with a time of 9:59 hours in the Traunsee region.
2005
In 2005, poor weather conditions dominated the marathon. 226 runners started again at Gmunden Town Hall Square and 66 runners in Ebensee (half marathon) to take on this sporting challenge. The unofficial best time of the day for the 70 km route remained in the local area, with Josef Dißlbacher from Pfaffing finishing in 8:04 hours. Barbara Lebutsch from Neuhaus took the lead among the women with a time of 11:20 hours.
2006
1 July 2006 was a mountain marathon day to remember. Rain and slippery ascents and descents demanded everything from the 290 runners. Local hero Benedikt Rabberger from Pinsdorf managed to break the 70 km course record held by Rene Steinpatzer since 2000 with a new best time of 7:30 hours.
2007
The weather conditions were similar to those of the previous year at the 19th Mountain Marathon on 7 July 2007. With slippery climbs, continuous rain, storms and cold temperatures, the participants were pushed to their limits. Willi Riederer from Ebensee managed to achieve the best time for the second time since 2004 with 7.54 hours. Margit Hirtzy from Graz was the new winner in the women's competition with 11:17 hours. 296 men and 57 women took part in the most beautiful mountain run in Europe.
2008
The 2008 marathon year was marked by the anniversary ‘20 Years of Mountain Marathons 1989–2008.’ On 3 July, a festive evening was held in the Kolpingsaal in Gmunden with many guests of honour and moving retrospectives in pictures and sound. The mountain run on 5 July, with a record participation of 364 athletes starting from Gmunden and Ebensee, saw Pinsdorf super athlete Benedikt Rabberger set an unofficial course record of 7 hours 26 minutes for the 70 km marathon. In the women's race, Margit Scherbaum from Scharnstein, a runner from the Salzkammergut region, also led the field with a time of 10.38 hours. In the ‘Children's Mountain Marathon’, held for the first time, the youngest participants took part in their own short distances with great enthusiasm.
2009
There was also a first in 2009: for the first time, a charity walk was held in aid of children's cancer support. In the ‘real’ marathon, Barbara Sullmann from Brixen was the fastest woman, completing the course in 11 hours and 36 minutes, while Willi Riederer was the fastest man, finishing in 7 hours and 54 minutes. Benni Rabberger's performance was also remarkable: as planned, he set off for a second time at exactly 12 noon for his charity run in aid of children's cancer support. And he actually made it, even though he had to cover a good part of the route in complete darkness. At half past one in the morning, more than twenty-two hours after his first start, he had done it: after 140 kilometres and 9,000 metres of elevation gain, he had reached the finish line!
2010
The 22nd Mountain Marathon on 3 July 2010 was marked by intense heat, but Nina Heidinger did not let the temperatures of up to 32 degrees distract her. The Gmunden native improved the women's record to 9 hours and 50 minutes. A record number of participants was narrowly missed under these conditions, with 413 starters. However, the third edition of the children's competition achieved this with 51 participants. This year's charity hike is being held in aid of the Traumatic Brain Injury Lobby.
2011
The 23rd edition on 2 July 2011 was a stark contrast to the previous year: rain, cold, snow showers and hail accompanied the participants. Nevertheless, another course record was broken: namely the men's half marathon from Gmunden to Ebensee: Benni Rabberger broke the 4-hour barrier with a time of 3 hours and 55 minutes. The children's mountain marathon continued to grow in its fourth year, with the proceeds from the charity hike going to the mountain rescue services of Gmunden, Ebensee and Traunkirchen.
2012
Records were already being broken in the run-up to the 24th marathon: more than 400 registrations were received within 12 hours, meaning that registration had to be closed after just half a day. In sweltering weather conditions of around 25 degrees, many participants struggled with cramps. There were no records broken in these weather conditions, but there were four new winners.
2013
New participation record at the 25th Sport 2000 Anniversary Mountain Marathon on 6 July 2013 with a total of 452 starters from Gmunden and Ebensee. Despite slippery running conditions, Nina Bauer from Gmunden significantly improved on her own top performance from 2010 with a time of 9:20 hours. Benedikt Rabberger from Pinsdorf, multiple winner of the 70 km route, once again took the lead in the overall marathon with a time of exactly 8:00 hours. Now in its sixth year, the Children's Mountain Marathon offered enthusiastic young runners a welcome opportunity to showcase their sporting achievements. Participants born between 1998 and 2008 and younger were treated to marathon flair on selected routes in the Gmunden city area. The 5th charity hike along the original route once again led a group over the Gmundnerberg to Gmunden's town hall square. The net proceeds from this event went to those affected by the flood disaster around Lake Traunsee. Manfred Spitzbart, the prudent main organiser of the mountain marathon since 1997, handed over this role to Harald Buchinger from Pinsdorf, son of marathon founder Willi Buchinger.
2014
Record number of participants and unpredictable weather at the 26th Mountain Marathon powered by Dynafit. A record 489 participants took on the challenges of the 26th Mountain Marathon ‘Around Lake Traunsee’ powered by Dynafit today. And the weather ensured that these challenges were considerable: From heavy rain and thunderstorms in the early hours of the morning to intense heat in the afternoon, the ‘mountain marathoners’ had it all today – yet the dropout rate was no higher than usual, with 447 participants reaching the finish line (also a record), resulting in a success rate of 91.41%. Despite these difficult conditions, the performances of the starters were excellent, but there were no new personal bests. Nina Bauer came closest on the Ebensee – Gmunden route: the record holder for the overall marathon missed the best performance by only 13 minutes with a time of 3:33 hours. This was her fifth victory overall (three times Ebensee – Gmunden, twice overall distance). Josef Dißlbacher stood on the top step of the podium for the sixth time as the winner of the full distance in the men's race: after 2005, 2011 and 2012, he was once again the best over the full distance, in addition to one victory each in the two half marathons. Gerhard Rastinger is a specialist on the Gmunden – Ebensee route: He won this distance for the fourth time after 2008, 2009 and 2012. In 2012, he was part of the first double victory in the history of the mountain marathon, and this year there was a second one from Ebensee to Gmunden: Florian Reiter and Manfred Steger each took 3 hours and 8 minutes and shared the victory. It was the first success for both of them, as well as for Johanna Simmer (total distance) and Karoline Holzleitner (Gmunden – Ebensee).
2015
Temperatures of up to 36 degrees in the shade did not deter 485 starters from competing in the 27th ‘Rund um den Traunsee’ mountain marathon powered by Dynafit, although the record field of 489 participants from the previous year was narrowly missed. Although high pressure system ‘Annelie’ prevented this best performance, a new record was set in sporting terms: namely in the women's half-distance race from Gmunden to Ebensee, which did not suffer so much from the heat due to its early start time (5:00 a.m.). Anna Hochhauser achieved her maiden victory in 5 hours and 10 minutes, beating the old record from 2003 by 4 minutes. It was exciting over the men's full distance, where the first three were separated by a mere 2 minutes after almost 9 hours of running! Here, too, there was a first-time winner, Jürgen Nini. In fact, it was a year of first-time successes: only in the women's full distance did Johanne Simmer repeat her success from the previous year. Albert Geisenberger (Gmunden – Ebensee) and Helena Bergthaler and Josef Schick (Ebensee – Gmunden) won their respective distances for the first time, although Albert Geisenberger had already been successful on the other half marathon route in 2013.
2016
The mountain marathon is experiencing its darkest hour yet in its 28th edition: the event has claimed a fatality, with 24-year-old Marcus B. finishing the race exhausted on the Gmundnerberg and then going missing for almost 24 hours. Sadly, he was found dead on Sunday by the countless helpers from the search teams. In light of this tragedy, the sporting achievements naturally take a back seat, but we are nevertheless fulfilling our duty as chroniclers by providing the most important figures: as expected, the changed registration procedure brought the mountain marathon a new record number of participants. With 665 starters, this was significantly more than the previous record of 489 set in 2016. However, due to the difficult weather conditions (very hot and humid), which ultimately led to the race being abandoned due to the high risk of thunderstorms, the percentage of those who reached the finish line was lower than ever before: Only 73% of the starters made it to Gmunden or Ebensee, significantly less than last year's previous negative record (86%). In absolute terms, however, the 2014 record (447) was also surpassed here with 483 finishers. Apart from that, it was a year of first-time winners and foreign guests: for the first time, the winners on all routes were able to enter their names in the list of winners. And for the first time, there was also a ‘non-Austrian’ success – on two routes: Anton Philipp from Germany won the men's overall marathon in 08:08:51, while Matus Vnencak from Slovakia won the half marathon from Gmunden to Ebensee in 04:10:25 – and you can see it in the winning times: For the first time, electronic timekeeping was used in the mountain marathon, so from now on, times will also be measured in seconds! The other winners: Women's full marathon: Daniela Karigl, 09:43:13; Women's half marathon Gmunden-Ebensee: Eva Heizinger (05:43:47); Women's half marathon Ebensee-Gmunden: Tina Hitzenberger (04:05:07); Men's half marathon Ebensee-Gmunden: Hermann Binder (03:25:35)
2017
Two winners at the ‘Rund um den Traunsee’ mountain marathon! It took 29 years for two athletes to share first place in the ‘Rund um den Traunsee’ marathon powered by Dynafit: Franz-Josef Schögl and Gerald Fister crossed the finish line together and shared their respective maiden victories. ‘First victories’ were a trend at the 2017 mountain marathon: The winner of the overall marathon (Evelyne Lachner), both winners of the Gmunden – Ebensee route (Kathrin Angerer from Germany and Jonas Borsoe Christensen from Denmark) and the winner of the Ebensee – Gmunden route (Klaus Stadlmayr) are also on the top podium for the first time. Only the winner of the half marathon from Ebensee to Gmunden, Nina Bauer, breaks the mould. She won this route for the fourth time (after 2009, 2011 and 2014) and has also won the overall marathon twice (2010 and 2013). A new participation record: 754 starters represent a significant increase compared to last year's record of 665.
2018
‘First-time winners’ in the men's competition, ‘repeat offenders’ in the women's competition
A total of 851 runners took part in the competition on one of the three sections, a significant increase on last year's record of 755 starters – and a record number of participants for the third time in a row! However, extremely slippery conditions prevented a new course record from being set. In the ‘summer of the century’, one of the few short periods of rain was encountered, and it only became increasingly sunny on Saturday. There was a strict ‘gender separation’ among the winners, as the winners in the men's category were all on the top step of the podium for the first time, while all the women had already won the mountain marathon before. But first things first: Johannes Klein from Germany achieved the best relative performance in the overall marathon, his 7:32:51 is the third-best winning time in the history of the mountain marathon and only six minutes behind the course record set by Benedikt Rabberger in 2008. Tina Hitzenberger won the full marathon for the first time, but she had already won the Ebensee-Gmunden half marathon in 2016. There, she succeeded Helena Bergthaler, who was able to add her name to the list of winners for the second time this year at this distance. There, she was the successor to Helena Bergthaler, who was able to add her name to the list of winners for the second time this year. The same applies to Eva Heizinger on the Gmunden – Ebensee route, where she achieved her second victory after 2016. That leaves the half distances for the men, where Michele Roth triumphed for the first time from Gmunden to Ebensee, as did Sebastian Hutterer from Ebensee to Gmunden.
2019
The mountain marathon does not quite break the 1,000 barrier
Just over 30 years after 42 die-hards took part in the first ‘Bergmarathon Rund um den Traunsee’ (Traunsee Mountain Marathon) on 10 June 1989, the SPORT-2000-Traunsee-Bergmarathon powered by Petzl did not quite break the 1,000-runner barrier expected based on the number of entries, but 967 starters still ensured the fourth consecutive record number of participants, significantly improving on last year's best performance of 851 ‘mountain marathoners’ who took part. On the sporting side: due to numerous route changes in recent years and the resulting lack of comparability between times, the organisers decided to freeze the ‘old’ record lists and start keeping new records from this year onwards. Logically, there are therefore six new course records this year, but we would still like to take a look at the previous best performances: Namely, to note that the races that started at night achieved very good times due to the dry conditions, while the performances in the Ebensee – Gmunden half marathon, where the runners did not set off until 8:30 a.m., suffered more from the increasing heat. There were also five new winners, with only Michele Roth repeating his success from last year in the Gmunden–Ebensee Half Marathon. Kerstin Tossmann, winner of the women's half marathon, was the only runner to achieve a time that had never been seen before in the old record lists, finishing in 5:01:33. The women's half marathon from Ebensee to Gmunden was the closest race, with Tanja Kaissl finishing just 57 seconds behind Petra Pramhas. This time, the winners' podium for the men's overall marathon had an international flair. Although Christian Doppler from Austria was successful, he was followed by two guests who had travelled a long way, Matias Saari (USA) and Markus Living (SWE). And in the women's overall marathon, there was also an exciting duel with extremely impressive performances, with Esther Fellhofer's 9:24:44 and Veronika Limberger's 9:34:03 in second place being absolute top times.
2020
Cancellation due to the coronavirus
The 32nd SPORT 2000 Traunsee Mountain Marathon on 15 January 2020 sold out within just one hour. At that time, the coronavirus was just beginning to spread in China. Unfortunately, it quickly spread throughout the world, and from March 2020 onwards, it was virtually impossible to hold large-scale events or sporting events this year.
Unfortunately, the Traunsee Mountain Marathon also fell victim to this, and so the 32nd edition of the race around Lake Traunsee had to be postponed to 3 July 2021.
2021
32nd SPORT 2000 TRAUNSEE MOUNTAIN MARATHON
The 32nd SPORT 2000 Traunsee Mountain Marathon took place in Gmunden on the weekend of 2–3 July. On Friday, a total of almost 150 motivated young runners demonstrated their talent in the children's races. In beautiful weather conditions, a total of 260 runners set off at 3 a.m. on Saturday on the entire route, which covers 63 km and 4,500 metres of elevation gain around Lake Traunsee. The two sections, Gmunden-Ebensee and Ebensee-Gmunden, have also been very popular for years, with 162 runners in Gmunden and 369 runners in Ebensee. Local hero Christian Doppler won the full course with a time of 07:51:12 and a lead of over 42:53 over second-placed Franz Josef Schögl (08:34:05). Esther Fellhofer from Asics Europe was the first woman to cross the finish line at Gmunden Town Hall Square, with a lead of over 1 hour over second-placed Lisa Lichtenegger.
Lukas Hufnagl won the Ebensee-Gmunden section in the men's race and Nina Bauer in the women's race. Mathias Deutschberger and Nicole Ireland won the second half marathon section between Ebensee and Gmunden.
The legendary running event took place for the first time in 2021 under the leadership of the new organizing team of Martin Eisenknapp, Martin Schimpl, and Wolfgang Dutzler, under the supervision of the two club chairpersons of the Gmunden and Ohlsdorf Nature Friends groups, Kurt Kramesberger and Silvia Hufnagl. "We are particularly pleased that the Traunsee Mountain Marathon was able to take place again in 2021 in the usual manner after last year's cancellation. Thank you to the more than 100 volunteers who once again ensured that the race was a complete success during the preparatory work and at the event itself. This was also confirmed by the many enthusiastic responses from the participants. Another big thank you goes to our sponsors.“ They enthusiastically agree: ”The Traunsee Mountain Marathon is not only Europe's most beautiful adventure run, but also an absolute showcase event for the region, which we are very happy to support," says Natascha Krawinkler, Head of Marketing at SPORT 2000.
This year's charity hike took participants up the Gmundnerberg mountain and then on to the finish line in Gmunden, with proceeds going to the Feichtlgut and the Kolibri Samaritan Association in Ebensee.
All information and pictures about the event can be found on the website at www.traunsee-bergmarathon.com, on Facebook at traunseebergmarathon, and on Instagram: @traunsee_bergmarathon.

MARKUS LEMP NEW WINNER WITH RECORD TIME
Markus Lemp (LC Sicking) ran so fast this year that you could have set your watch by him. From the start at 3:00 a.m. at Gmunden's Rathausplatz to the finish line, he maintained a blistering pace and won the Raiffeisen Full Marathon in an incredible time of 7:29:46. Even double winner Christian Doppler, who finished a strong second, took his hat off to this achievement. Local hero Franz Josef Schögl completed the podium in third place.
Esther Fellhofer celebrated victory in the women's race for the third time in a row. Just one week after coming third in the Lavaredo Ultratrail, she secured another victory in 08:45:16. When asked how she manages to endure this series of ultra events, Esthofer emphasized the importance of the Traunsee Mountain Marathon: “No matter what races are happening the week before or after, I love the Traunsee Mountain Marathon, the course, the atmosphere, and that's why I come back here every year.”
The Traunsee Mountain Marathon is not just about top performances. Everyone who takes part and reaches the finish line is celebrated here. Whether you cross the finish line in Ebensee or at Gmunden Town Hall Square, you will be greeted with thunderous applause even at late hours.
In addition to the competitions around Lake Traunsee, Benedikt Rabbergerauch once again organized a charity hike to raise funds for a local family that had suffered a series of tragic events.
Despite weather-related delays, more than 100 children took part in the children's and school races on Friday. Former runner Christian Pflügl and Fritz Kieninger led the youngsters around the laps along the Gmunden Esplanade.
2023
A mountain marathon that flows seamlessly
Markus Lemp won the mountain marathon around Lake Traunsee for the second time in a row in pouring rain. However, everyone who reached the finish line at Gmunden Town Hall Square on Saturday was a winner. Gmunden, 4:45 a.m.: No view from the observation deck. The thick fog in front of the Traunsteinhaus makes it impossible to even guess that dawn has broken. But at least there is nothing to be heard yet. The thick raindrops that usually patter on the already slippery rocks have not yet fallen. At 4 a.m., volunteers gathered at the highest refreshment station of the Traunsee Mountain Marathon. Music blares from the speakers, allowing those who spent the night here to dream of an AC/DC concert. The guests who will stop by today won't stay long. Water, cola, salt, maybe some warm soup. Then it's onward. Once around Lake Traunsee. Raphael Miks is the first to bring light into the darkness. The Vorchdorf native arrives at Traunstein after one hour, 56 minutes, and 38 seconds. It is 4:56 a.m. Just two minutes later, Markus Lemp from Schörfling reaches the hut at 1,575 meters above sea level. Cheers, applause, and rain. Shortly after five in the morning, the floodgates open. In the hours that follow, participants in the Traunsee Mountain Marathon will feel as if they are running in the lake rather than around its shores. The flood at Spitzelstein But that doesn't seem to deter anyone from the adventure of the “mountain marathon.” “Sauwedda, deppades,” says one. “Hüft jo nix,” says another. And the eventual winner, Stefanie Gaul, simply put on a rain poncho with a smile. It's 63 kilometers and 4,500 meters of elevation gain before you can call yourself “King of the Lake.” And today, they should all be crowned. Markus Lemp, who runs from Ebensee to the Feuerkogel in just one hour and two minutes and takes the lead there. But also those who take much more time – and are rewarded with the end of the deluge, at least from early afternoon onwards. Only in Karbach is nothing moving anymore. The streams around the Spitzelstein have turned into flash floods on the lake shore, and the forest road is also affected. Too dangerous for organizers and participants. Anyone who has not passed the checkpoint in time has to stop. Those who have already reached the southern shore of Lake Traunsee can celebrate: there is a festive atmosphere in the Kreh in Ebensee. Bad weather, good spirits: that's the theme of the 34th edition of the traditional marathon. And Markus Lemp also pushes through: after 2022, the Schörflinger wins again this year over the full distance in 7:34:48. Stefanie Gaul reaches the safety of the shore after 10:24:10 as the first woman.
